Yao guai are a species of mutated black bears. These creatures are found in the Capital Wasteland and Zion Canyon.

Anatomy and appearance[]

Yao guai are large, man-sized (or larger) ursine predators with patches of fur and diseased looking skin. They appear similar to their ancestor, the black bear, aside from the aforementioned traits. Their front limbs also appear to be longer than their hind ones.

Behavior[]

Although generally found alone, yao guai exhibit a gentle, familial bond toward one another when found together, provided they do not feel threatened by the observer's presence. They can be found in groups wandering the Capital Wasteland, mostly around rocky, hilly places, or in caverns. They also seem to appear at night more often than day, suggesting they are nocturnal. Yao guai will attack nearly any other animals or people they encounter, including deathclaws. However, yao guai have been known to be occasionally friendly towards bloatflies. There are tamed yao guai which can be seen following and protecting their masters in the Capital Wasteland.

Subspecies[]

Due to their relatively wide level of dispersal across the post-apocalyptic North American wasteland, yao guai have developed into a few seperate subspecies.

Zion Canyon Yao Guai[]

The yao guai of Zion Canyon seem to be visually identical to the yao guai of the Capital Wasteland, but larger. They are second to only the deathclaw in terms of raw strength and speed. They are also normally found in groups of two to four.

Giant Yao Guai[]

Giant yao guai are larger versions of yao guai. They may be two to three times larger than a man. A giant yao guai can easily kill a human, along with most other creastures.
